Movie review of Wicked Part One
The movie starts out with the opening number "No One Mourns the Wicked" and people celebrating the death of the Wicked Witch of the West, Elphaba. Then Glinda appears and confirms that Elphaba is dead. After Glinda tries to leave, someone asks her if Glinda and Elphaba were friends. She says yes and tells the people her and Elphaba's backstory.
Glinda and Elphaba attended a college in Oz called Shiz University. Elphaba was dropping off her sister Nessarose who is in a wheelchair. After Madame Morrible who is the Dean of Sorcery at Shiz University sees Elphaba's magical powers she accepts Elphaba into a class as well as the university. Elphaba accepts, but she has to be roommates with Glinda.
Elphaba looks up to the Wizard of Oz who lives in the Emerald City. She wants to help the Wizard as well as do good for Oz. She gets a letter from the Wizard and she gets to meet him.
In the meantime, Fiyero Tigelaar, the Prince of the Winkies, transfers to Shiz University and every girl including Glinda has a crush on him. The students of Shiz University as well as Glinda and Fiyero go to the Ozdust Ballroom to dance. Elphaba shows up and people stare at her. She starts doing a dance routine and Glinda joins in because she did not want to feel left out.
Dr. Dillamond, a goat, is a professor at Shiz, and senses something bad is happening in Oz. The Wizard of Oz is trying to control the animal population by not letting them talk. When Dr. Dillamond gets taken away by the Wizard's guards, the replacement brings out a lion cub and Elphaba and Fiyero set it free.
Elphaba and Glinda take the train to the Emerald City and have a great time. When Glinda and Elphaba meet the Wizard of Oz, Elphaba wishes that the Wizard can help her change her green skin color as well as help the animals in Oz. It turns out the Wizard of Oz is fake and a fraud.
Glinda and Elphaba also found a book called the Grimmerie which is a spell book. Elphaba reads it and one of the monkey guards grows wings.
Glinda and Elphaba have an argument about Madade Morrible and the Wizard. Glinda wants Elphaba to apologize. Elphaba wants to stop the Wizard of Oz and his corruption and she levitates on a broomstick and escapes the Emerald City.
I give this movie a 10/10. I really loved it because I saw the Broadway stage version in my early teenaged years and I enjoyed it very much. I would compare them because in the movie, there are two new characters. The two characters are Glinda's two college friends. I liked both the stage and the film version equally.
Have you seen Wicked Part One the movie or the Broadway version? If so, what did you think about it?
